Olesya Gonchara Street is in the Zhovtnevyy district of Dnipropetrovsk, in Nagornaya part. But that is now the name it always bore. In the end of 19 century the huge undeveloped area of the district has started to fill with residential quarters. In 1885 the quarter long Kirpichnaya street appears. By the 1898 this street gets its modern look.
The 1913 map hints the new name of the street – Poltavskaya. The reason for such a change is unknown. Perhaps, it was pointed to Poltava. In 1934 the name changed to Kirova. At the beginning of 2003 was the final change. The 23 January City council deputies’ decree renamed Kirova street of the Zhovtnevyy district to bear the name of the famous Ukrainian poet Oles’ Gonchar.
The oldest universities of the city dwell by this street – National mining university, found in 1899, Prydniprovs’ka state academy of building and architecture. Next doors is the National metallurgic academy and the Ukrainian state university of chemistry and technology. The city is proud of all this educational facilities. The never ending flow of students makes Gonchara surroundings one of the most vibrant places of Dnepropetrovsk.
